For Dave Sandersfeld, Southern Minnesota has always been a portrait of home. And home is where the heart of his sound lies. With meandering melodic guitar runs and heartfelt lyricism, his songwriting style evokes the gently rolling plains and deep lakes he so greatly treasures.

Born and raised in Mankato, Minnesota, Dave first gained momentum in 2017 with the release of his debut album Better Than This with nods from notable publications like WCCO Radio, KFAI, and 93X.
August 21 – Beret Finken:
“From the moment I came into the world, my life was filled with music – largely thanks to my parents, who are very musical themselves. I grew up listening to my mom play and sing Bach and Elvis (among many other things) around the house, learned sight-reading and part-singing from hymns we sang in church every Sunday, danced in the streets of Decorah, Iowa to the Scandinavian folk band The Foot-Notes during the summers my parents sold their work at art fairs, and watched my dad learn how to build and play his own instruments. Music was everywhere, in everything; it was just who we were.”

“It was 1964. [Dan Duffy] and the rest of The Gestures were one of only a handful of bands in Mankato, and maybe the only one tinkering with the new style of British-tinged rock introduced to America by a certain moppy-haired quartet. Awhile earlier, the band recorded a song in a garage and gave it to a DJ at KYSM. That DJ handed the recording off to a producer in Minneapolis, who decided to record “Run, Run, Run.”
The song caught on, riding increasing airplay all over America to the No. 44 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in late 1964. The song even cracked the top 10 in several local charts across the country.
In the years that followed, The Gestures — Klugherz, Menten, Dan Duffy (guitar/vocals), the late Gus Dewey (guitar/vocals) and the late Bruce Waterston (drums) — were signed to Soma Records, a relatively tiny label out of Minneapolis, and began playing tours across the country.
Since they were just teenagers (Waterston was only 15), some in the band couldn’t go until they had their parents’ permission. Once secured, they toured for about a year and a half. They played Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg during a tour of Canada. They played in venues up and down the West Coast, in Oklahoma in Texas and made it as far east as Ohio.”

Mal Murphy is a Mankato, MN-based singer-songwriter who released her first, and highly anticipated, EP in December of 2023 entitled, “Grow Up.” Her sound is decidedly Americana-–acoustic accompanying rich vocals with an occasional harmonica. The development of Mal’s style was inspired by greats such as Brandi Carlile, Gregory Alan Iskob, Jade Bird, and Ani DiFranco. Mal’s voice is clear, bright, and powerful, known for snapping the casual listener in a noisy bar to allegiance. Her wide-ranged,versatile voice blends well in duets or charms as a passionate and charismatic solo artist. Mal’s many loyal and diverse followers gather to hear her pour new light into well loved classic covers, or to hear her traverse new landscapes with her original songs.

Gilead7′s music is a testament to free spirited thinking on religion, the world, and art. G7 performs his excommunicated rap and instrumentals to pagans, Jesus enthusiasts, and anyone in between, rhyming theological philosophy over porno moans or Simon and Garfunkel chopped but not screwed. It just depends on the day and how the “Spirit” leads him.

We aspire to elevate the experiences of local songwriters to be seen and heard in a comfortable, intimate, affirming environment. We want to add to the collective mission in our area highlighting the value of original music and its positive impact on our community.
