What is ShopART?
ShopART Midwest is an artist-centric, non-commission gallery that connects Midwest artists to the buyers who appreciate living with the arts and handcrafted items. This is a service by Twin Rivers Council for the Arts supporting our local culture makers and making it easier for anyone to bring special, handmade arts into their lives.Â
Selena Medellin
Selena Medellin is a ceramicist originally from the West Side of St. Paul, currently based out of Mankato, Minnesota. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2021 and her Master of Art in 2023 from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Specializing in ceramics and mixed media sculpture, Selena creates work that echoes the traditions learned growing up in a first generation Mexican-American home.
In the organic ceramic forms I create, I provide a look into memories of growing up with my late grandfather, a first generation Mexican-American. Our house was adorned with Mexican paintings, an altar for those that had passed, and traditional textiles such as sarapes, rugs, and blankets. I learned stories of our ancestors, the myths and legends of our native land, and that you must celebrate both life and death. I use the combination of ceramics and mixed media to convey both the vibrancy and solemnity of Mexican tradition. In my work, I reference Aztec Gods and Goddesses, Mexican textiles, and the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos. My sculptures depict both the memories I have, and my desire to maintain growth in the relationship with my heritage.
